She was born on September 8, 1930, in Amherst County, daughter of the late Robert Kirkwood Cofflin and Lillian Gertrude Cofflin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lenwood Gillette, Sr, a brother, Melvin (Red) Harris Cofflin, and her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Kenney Gillette.
Virginia was a faithful member of Family Life Ministries (Church of God of Prophecy) in Lynchburg VA. She loved her church, where she served as Youth leader, Sunday School teacher, Missions Director, Clerk and Treasurer, and in many other positions over the years. Perhaps her most important calling was that of “prayer warrior.” Virginia believed in the power of prayer and was called on by many for prayer over the years. She loved her Lord with all her heart and served Him faithfully from a very young age. With confidence, she can now say, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” (II Timothy 4:7)
She loved and cherished her family and is survived by her three devoted children: Richard Gillette, Jr. of Lynchburg, Gene Gillette (Carol) of Huddleston, and Cheryl Vernon (Donald, who was like a son to her) of Madison Heights; five beloved grandchildren, Robyn Foreman (Mike) of Manchester TN, Brandon Gillette of Montpelier VA, Jonathan Gillette (Sadie) of Huddleston, Candice Cage (James) of Lynchburg, and Chris Vernon (Robyn) of Crestview FL; ten great-grandchildren, Mikaela, Chris, Camdyn, Jocelynn, Roxie, James, Fatima, Kelis, Stella, and Reese; her dear sister, Peggy Floyd (Preston) and sister-in-law, Doris Cofflin of Madison Heights; and her goddaughter, Crystal Hawkins of Cary, NC.
The family would like to thank Dr. Karina Mill Lupo, Kimberly Jordan, P.A. (Palliative Care), and the excellent nursing and care staff at Lynchburg General Hospital, East 3rd Floor Surgical Unit, for the compassionate care given to their mother.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. For the safety and concern for others, a private family service is being held, with COVID protocols followed. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Cemetery, with her dear friend and pastor, Rev. Gary Vernon officiating.
You may pay your respects to Mrs. Gillette, from 2 pm until 6 pm, Sunday, February 14, at Whitten Timberlake.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that you please consider a donation to the Church of God of Prophecy, 2600 Garfield Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
