Born in Roanoke, VA, on October 14, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Ross Delmar Spence and Callie Shockley Spence, both of Lynchburg, VA. Virginia was preceded in death by her eldest sister, Shirley Spence Angus of Madison Heights.
Virginia’s life was defined by her deep love for her family and her unwavering dedication to helping others. A proud graduate of Lynchburg College, Class of 1971, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, becoming the first in her immediate family to achieve a college degree. She worked at the Department of Social Services from 1971 until 1985, where she spent much of her career serving the elderly—an area she remained passionate about throughout her life. After retiring to raise her only child, Amanda, Virginia considered her role as a mother her greatest achievement, pouring her heart into every moment of her daughter’s life.
A lover of classic films, word searches, and puzzles, Virginia had a gentle soul that found comfort in the simple joys of life. She was an avid collector of Peanuts memorabilia, finding kinship with Charlie Brown, and loved to laugh at Snoopy’s antics. Her love for animals, particularly Cairn Terriers, was another significant part of her life, as she raised several over the years, finding companionship and comfort in their presence.
Virginia’s kindness was known to all who knew her. She often put others’ needs before her own, demonstrating a selflessness that earned her the admiration and love of family and friends. Whether she was caring for her pets, cherishing time with her loved ones, or sharing a laugh, Virginia’s spirit was one of warmth, humor, and compassion.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Wilson Wesley Noel of Forest; her daughter, Amanda Blair Noel of Forest; her sister, Roberta Spence Rhyne of Aurora, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside inurnment service will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with Polly Starnes officiating.
