Walter Guilford Apperson, 73, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, June 11, 2012. Walter was the devoted husband of Shirley Parker Apperson for almost fifty-four years. Walter was born January 22, 1938 in Madison Heights to the late Walter Snead and Ella White Apperson Whorley. He was a retired bus driver and dispatch supervisor at the Greater Lynchburg Transit Authority, where he worked for more than thirty years. After retirement, Walter worked at Whitten Funeral Home. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. Reservist and attended Fort Hill United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Steven W. Apperson and wife, Cindy of Pensacola, FL; grandson, David Scott Apperson and fiancée, Beth Anderson of Seattle, Washington; sister-in-law, Elsie Franklin of Evington; step-mother, Ann Apperson of Fredericksburg; two brothers, Lynn Apperson of Madison Heights and David Thomas Apperson of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Andrea Payne of Madison Heights and Sandra Humphrey of Fredericksburg; three cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Waltz, the Rev. Janet Hawkins, and friend and Pastor Ernest Scott officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Fort Hill United Methodist Church, Centra Hospice, or the Lynchburg Humane Society. Whitten Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Park Avenue Chapel is serving the family.
