

William Lyle Akers, Sr. 82, of Forest passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Twice married, he was preceded in death by Mildred Simpson Akers and is survived by his wife Mertle Jennings Akers.
Born in Spout Spring, VA, April 6, 1932, he was the son of the late George Harman Akers and Ruth Tanner Akers. Bill spent his formative years at the Presbyterian Home in Lynchburg and was a 1950 graduate of E.C. Glass High School. He was a former employee of the Mead Corp., Babcock & Wilcox and Brown & Root Construction Co. and retired from Lynchburg College. He was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
Five sisters, Edna Akers, Francis Akers, Georgia Akers, Rachael A. Madden and Nancy A. Harvey and one brother, George H. Akers, Jr. preceded him in death.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Susan D. Akers of Madison Heights, William L. Akers, Jr. and wife Teresa of Goochland, Mark S. Akers and wife Jean of St. Charles, MO, Timothy H. Akers and wife Diane of Brentwood, TN and Laura Akers Powell and husband Chris of Forest; three step children, Connie Truxell and husband Geary of Lynchburg, David Perdue and wife Beth of Gladys and Troy Perdue and wife Charlotte of Halifax Co.; nineteen grandchildren, Kirsten Hawkins, Mark Werner, Matthew Werner, Ryan Akers, Emily Akers, Michael Akers, Gena Taylor, Levi Perdue, Kent Perdue, Annie Perdue, Joy Perdue, Jason Perdue, Elliot Perdue, William Perdue, Sally Perdue, Patrick Perdue, Ian Perdue, Clark Powell and Lilly Powell; five great grandchildren, Mary Hawkins, Cole Werner, Ayden Werner, Guillermo Akers and Clay Taylor; eight nieces and four nephews and he is also survived by his dog Molly.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Etheridge officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service.
