

Born on September 16, 1930, in Rochester, New York, Joan graduated from Immaculate Heart College and began her career as an elementary school teacher. On June 27, 1953, she married the love of her life, George “Pat” Gendron. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on faith and love, raising seven children.
Joan was a woman of deep faith, service, and compassion. She was a devoted and active long-time parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church, generously volunteering in the parish office and participating in numerous ministries including the Women’s Guild, providing transportation to Mass for those in need, and other senior citizen services. Joan served on the board of the Catholic Women’s League and was an active volunteer through Catholic Charities, providing Mobile Meals and supporting St. Elizabeth Center. For more than 30 years, Joan served as a dedicated and compassionate volunteer at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, always giving of her time with kindness and care. In addition, she served her community as both a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and volunteered for the New American Theater. Joan’s generous spirit and beautiful heart reached far beyond her service, touching countless lives through her quiet and faithful support of many charitable causes. There wasn’t a moment in her life that wasn’t geared toward helping others.
Joan had a deep love for life and an unwavering devotion to her family. She treasured every gathering and celebration, always creating an atmosphere filled with love and laughter. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends, playing bridge, reading, and bowling.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 72 years, Pat; her cherished children, daughter Karen Shafer and son Patrick Gendron; and her brother, Thomas Cantarano.
Joan is survived by her loving children: Paul (Michele), Tom (Traci), Larry (Margie), Maureen Maguire (Jim), Dennis (Trina), son-in-law, Gael Shafer (Peggy) and daughter-in-law, Sherri Gendron. She also leaves behind 23 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
Faith and family were the cornerstones of Joan’s life. She served selflessly, gave generously, and loved deeply. Her legacy will live on through her family and the many lives she touched.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Joan and Pat’s caregivers for their compassionate care, kindness, and support, which brought comfort and dignity to them throughout their final years.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday April 22nd from 4-6 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL, with a prayer service and rosary beginning at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 23rd at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road, Rockford, IL. A private burial will be held at a later date.
