Mavis June Stanton

Mavis June Stanton, 89, passed away peacefully, Monday, October 22, 2018 at Liberty Village in Freeport. She was born on June 18, 1929, in Black River Falls, WI, the daughter of Hallie and Verda (Gee) Goldsmith. Mavis graduated from high school and went on to marry Arthur Shoemaker April 28 1948. She worked for several years in Rockford before eventually marrying John E. Stanton, Sr., on June 22, 1968. She was a dedicated mother and wife, who loved singing hymns, playing the organ and working on various committees in her church. In her younger years, she was a dedicated and faithful member at Open Bible Center, Faith Center and First Assembly of God in Rockford.

Mavis was loved and will be missed by her children, Brent (Renea) Shoemaker, John (Laura) Stanton, Jr., Renee (Bernard) Bartholome III, and Daniel Stanton; 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, sisters; Opal (Ross) Arneson, Bonnie Shoemaker, Janet (Robert) Eddy and LuAnn (Michael) Gaede, brothers; Randy (Cecelia) Goldsmith, Barry (Freda) Goldsmith and Christy (Priscilla) Goldsmith, sister-in-laws; Judy Goldsmith, Lois Goldsmith and Phyllis Derouchey as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, first husband, Art Shoemaker, 4 brothers; Daniel Goldsmith, Roger Goldsmith, Gary Goldsmith, Allen Goldsmith, brother-in-law Howard Shoemaker, and sister-in-law June Schmitt.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, IL 61115. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rockford Rescue Mission in Mavis’s name.
