Rodney “Steve” Whelchel, 56, of Rockford, passed away at Swedish American Hospital on Monday, September 12, with his loving family by his side. Steve was the son of Marvin and Bethel Whelchel, born on March 17, 1955, in Rockford. He was a 30+ year member of the Local Union 364 of Electrical Workers, working very hard to provide for and support his family. Steve was an avid Bears fan, who really enjoyed watching games with his sons. Steve is survived by his sons; Ryan and Eric, and his siblings; Marvinteen, Marsha, and Judy. He is preceded in death by his parents. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 16, at 10 a.m. at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N Alpine Rd. Machesney Park IL, 61115. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 15, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
