

Charles Burton Hollis III, 95, of 5300 Zebulon Rd. died Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 24th, at 11 A.M. at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. John Bagwell will officiate. Born in Collier, Ga., on May 8, 1916, Mr. Hollis was the son of the late Charles Burton Hollis, Jr. and Ruth Searcy Hollis. Mr. Hollis graduated in 1935 from Lanier High School for Boys in Macon, Ga. and later went to the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1941. After graduating from Georgia Tech, he worked at Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, Md. as an engineer. He left Martin to enter the Air Corp Cadet program at Yale University. He received a commission as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II and served as a flight engineer on B-29 aircraft in the Pacific Theater. He was Honorably Discharged at the end of the war as a Captain, having received three Battle Stars and the Air Medal with clusters.
After the war, he became a partner at Sam Hall and Sons Construction Company where he remained until retirement. He was a founding member of The Howard Community Club and belonged to Macon Little Theatre. He was a life-long member of Martha Bowman United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served on various boards. He was associated with the Meals on Wheels program at Coronado Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. for many years. He and Gladys were avid travelers, circling the globe several times.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Gladys Hall Hollis, his two sons, Charles Burton Hollis IV (Peggy) and Sam Hall Hollis (Kay); one daughter, Gladys Hollis Jensen, and two grandchildren, Brittany Beckley and Bethany Beckley. He was predeceased in death by his daughter, Ruth Hollis Beckley.
