

Clayton Doty, 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 in Macon. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 30, at 11 a.m. at Ingleside Baptist Church, 834 Wimbish Road with Dr. Tim McCoy and the Reverend Mark Hudgins officiating. The family will greet friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the service time in the Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Central Georgia Council, 4335 Confederate Way, Macon, 31217 or Bibb County Meals on Wheels, 1212 Gray Highway, Macon 31211.
Clayton was born and raised in Old Hickory, Tennessee, the son of the late Clayton and Nette Doty. As a youth he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. During the Korean conflict he graduated from Officer Candidate School and Leadership School and was a Captain in the United States Army. He was the 100,000 man to be inducted at Ft. Jackson during the Korean conflict. He attended Union University in Jackson, Tennessee for three years on the varsity football team. Clay graduated from Auburn in 1955 and was a member of the S.A.E. fraternity. He and his wife have resided in Macon for the past 22 years.
Clayton began his career with the Boy Scouts of America in Columbus, Georgia. He served as assistant Scout Executive in Albermarle, N.C. Clayton was the Council Executive in Asheville, North Carolina, Macon and Knoxville, Tennessee. He served in several capacities with the National Council, BSA before becoming the Personnel Director of the Southern Region, Boy Scouts of America and was in this position until he retired.
Clayton served on the Boards of Boy Scouts and Meals on Wheels. He was a long time member of Rotary and volunteer instructor for the AARP Safe Driving Course. Clayton served on the Board of Family Motor Coach Association and was a member of Wally Byam Airstream Club for 40 years.
Clayton was honored by the City of Macon as they declared on January 29, 1982 as “Clayton Doty Day” by then mayor, George Israel. In 2008 he received the Fred Manget Award for service to Senior Citizens from Bibb County Meals on Wheels. Clayton was also presented the Silver Beaver award for Scouting in February 2010.
Clayton was a member of Ingleside Baptist Church, Brotherhood Sunday School class and Inglelites. He was ordained deacon at First Baptist Church, Columbus, Georgia and also served as deacon at Vineville Baptist Church where he was President of the Senior Group, XYZ. Clayton was a member of the 21st Century Society for Union University and the Society for the 21st Century at Wesleyan College.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Neal Doty; sons, C. Neal (Deborah) Doty of Eatonton and Sam Doty of Macon; granddaughters, Paige Michele (Michael) Carson of Savannah and Jennifer Hope Doty of Macon; great-grandson, Hayes Neal Carson; brothers, Charles Doty of Knoxville, TN and David Doty of Oakboro, NC.
