

MACON - F. Don Bradford died Saturday April 16, 2011, after a long illness. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 13, 1926, the son of the late Floyd and Mae Bradford. He grew up in Macon and was a graduate of Lanier High School. He attended Davidson College as a member of the ROTC program and after a brief stint in Rome, New York, returned to Macon and graduated from Mercer University. He married Frances Clements in 1949. Don founded Dixie Metal Company, owned Macon Janitor Service, White Swann Chemical Company, and served on the Board of Directors of First Liberty Financial for more than 30 years.
Don was an active member of the Macon Community. He was a member of the Macon Rotary Club where he served as Club President, was active on the Board of Directors, and was involved with many other Rotary committees & activities over the years. He was instrumental in fundraising for the American Cancer Society where he was Board Chairman for many years. He was recognized for this service when the American Cancer Society office on Cherry St. in downtown Macon was built in August of 1999 and dedicated as the F. Don Bradford building, in his honor.
Don was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years; serving there as a Deacon, an Elder, and a member of the Canterbury Sunday School Class. He also served on the founding Board for First Presbyterian Day School. He was a member of Idle Hour Country Club where he was an avid golfer and member of the U.S. Closed Golf Association for many years.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Frances. He is survived by his daughter Leslie Bradford Sullivan, her husband Bruce, and their children Robert, Elizabeth and Laura, all of Charlottesville, VA; and his son Rusty Bradford of Macon, GA. He is also survived by his sister Martha Bradford Swann of Spartanburg, SC, her children and grandchildren, and his sister-in-law Jane Carter, her husband Norman, and their children and grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 21st at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, Mulberry St. with the Reverend Chip Miller officiating. Visitation will be directly after the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. At the service, the members of both the Canterbury Class and U.S. Closed are encouraged to sit as a group.
