George Key Parker, age 85, died at his residence on Sunday, October 24, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, October 27, at Vineville Baptist Church, Macon, with interment at Riverside Cemetery, Madison Street. The Rev. Tripp Martin, Dr. Richard Hemphill, and Dr. Otis Andrews will officiate and the Lamplighters Sunday School Class will act as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, October 26, at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street, Macon.
Born in Gordon, Georgia, Mr. Parker was the youngest of thirteen children. He was a graduate of Gordon High School. He was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Germany and France. Following his military service, Mr. Parker had a long business career, serving as the manager of the Sears Catalog Store in Dublin, and for thirty-five years as an agent for State Farm Insurance in Macon. He lived a life committed to Christ and was a lifelong Baptist, serving in many capacities in the Baptist church including Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School director, choir member, and on several committees. Mr. Parker was a member of Glenwood Hills Baptist Church, Macon, for 39 years and, currently, Vineville Baptist Church, Macon. He was a member of the Gideons International, and the Kiwanis and Optimist Clubs. He was involved in athletics during most of his life, playing tennis and basketball on high school teams, and golf as an adult.
Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Maude Goodwin Parker. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Denise Parker, of Macon; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Erika Parker Boone and Matthew Boone of Bonaire; granddaughter Elyse Marie Parker of Atlanta; great-grandson, Matthew Parker Boone of Bonaire; sister, Jeanie Fleming Brown of Gray, and several nieces and nephews.
