Irma Jones Kirby passed away on July 15, 2015. She was born in Cook County, GA on January 25, 1919 to the late Quillie Wade Jones and Hattie Castleberry Jones. Irma was preceded in death by Bill Kirby - her loving husband of 52 years, and Robert Kirby, their 17 year old son.
Irma is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law – Charles and Marlou Kirby of Elon, NC, Ron Kirby and Deborah Schoch of Southport, NC, and Dan and Jane Kirby of Greensboro, GA, and by her sisters Sara Fleming of Adel, GA, and Betty Coppage of Waycross, GA. Irma was a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren (David Kirby, Patrick Kirby, Amy Boggs, Katie Combs, Kim Kirby, Karen Kirby, Brian Kirby, Matt Kirby and Lizz Zahn) and 11 great-grandchildren (Anna, Emily and Jake Boggs; Chase and Sam Combs; Tristan and Wesley Kirby; Jack and Miles Kirby; Caleb and Kyle Zahn).
Irma was very active in the Methodist Church all her life. Her deep love for her Lord was evident in the many ways she served Him. At different times, she taught Sunday school for youth and adults, led MYF, held many leadership positions in the United Methodist Women, was in charge of many fundraisers, served on innumerable committees, and organized homecoming services, all the while singing in church choirs for over 60 years! Irma had a beautiful soprano voice; she sang many solos through the years, and frequently was asked to sing at weddings and funerals. She was also very active in various PTA organizations as her sons progressed through the school systems.
Irma was a fantastic cook and an excellent seamstress. If she was at home in the evenings, she was always working on something – knitting, crocheting or making beautiful lace tablecloths and the like. She also loved to read and to travel.
But most of all, she loved her family. Irma demonstrated that in innumerable ways over her entire lifetime. Her face would always light up during the many wonderful times she shared with her children, grandchildren and extended family. The strong family bond was evident by the love shared by all toward each other.
Visitation will be at Boone Funeral Home, 202 N. Hutchinson Ave., Adel, on Sunday, July 19th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. A service celebrating her life will be held at Adel United Methodist Church on Monday, July 20th at 10:30 am, followed by burial at Antioch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irma’s memory may be made to Adel United Methodist Church.
