

Jack Fernando Menendez, 90, passed away Friday, December 11, 2020. Private services will be held on Thursday, December 17, 2020 in the Memorial Garden of Christ Church. Rev. Cynthia C. Knapp will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Christ Church or the Macon Volunteer Clinic.
Dr. Menendez was born in Daytona Beach, Florida the son of the late Maria Jimenez Menendez and Fernando Menendez. He graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in chemistry and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Medical Corps in Germany.
Jack completed medical school and his general surgery residency at Emory University followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York.
Jack joined Dr. Benham Stewart’s surgical practice in Macon. He had a special interest in the treatment of cancer and played a role in bringing chemotherapy services to Macon. Outside of his medical practice he was a clinical professor at Mercer University School of Medicine, Middle Georgia Hospital Chief of Surgery, and President of Staff. Dr. Menendez was a member of the Georgia Surgical Society, the American College of General Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society.
He served as President of the Medical Association of Georgia, the J.C. Thoroughman Surgical Society, and the Bibb County Medical Society. He was a board member of the American Cancer Society, the Executive Committee of MAG Mutual, the Macon Surgical Society, and the Georgia Society of General Surgeons.
From 2000-2019 he served his community as a volunteer physician at the Macon Volunteer Clinic and enjoyed teaching medical students at the Mercer University School of Medicine.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Menendez was a lay reader and Senior Warden of the vestry at Christ Episcopal Church. He was an avid runner, reader, and bird watcher and enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Connie; children, Tony, Angela and Anita; and his grandchildren, Alex, Amelia, Jack, Kathleen, and Will.
Jack lived in service of others and finished every prayer with the phrase, “Keep us ever mindful of the needs of others.”
He will certainly be missed but remembered with respect, admiration, and love.
