

MACON – Joel W. Dickens passed away on Friday, February 3, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday at Bloomfield United Methodist Church with interment in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Cile Mitchell will officiate. The family will meet friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Sunday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono Avenue and may be reached at 101 Wilson Way, Macon 31216. They suggest that memorial contributions be made to Bloomfield United Methodist Church, 5511 Bloomfield Road, Macon 31206.
Mr. Dickens was born April 4, 1943 in Macon, GA the son of the late Faye and Robert Dickens. He was a member of Bloomfield United Methodist Church and Local Union 461. He was retired from Armstrong World Industries after thirty-nine years of services. Mr. Dickens graduated from Willingham High School and was the first football player to make All-State. He was named the All Middle Georgia Football Player of the Year in 1961 and played in the 1962 North-South All-Star Football game. He received a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee Martin. After serving with the U. S. Army, Mr. Dickens began coaching youth at Agnes Barden Elementary School and moved to Midget Football to coach the Senior League Bulldogs where he coached many Super Bowl championship teams. He went to Windsor Academy in 1981 and coached girls softball until his retirement in 1997. His teams won eleven Region Championships while at Windsor. In 2003 he was presented a Distinguished Service Award from the G.I.S.A. He was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Dickens and good friend, Joe Swain.
He is survived by his daughter Tammy Dickens of Macon and his aunt, Bernice Snow of Macon and several cousins. He leaves behind good friends, including Dean Johnson of Macon, Lee Martin of Perry and Eddie Durrence of Glenville.
