Karen Boyd Jones, age 71, of Macon, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. After successfully battling cancer for seven years, her health declined in recent months and she died peacefully under wonderful care at Atrium hospital, with her daughters by her side.
A celebration of life for Karen will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 565 Wimbish Road, Macon, GA 31210, followed by a visitation in the Fellowship Hall. Rev. Dr. Ralph Hawkins will officiate.
Karen was born and grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and attended Furman University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies. She further completed a course of study at Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School, which led her to a position as a legal secretary at the Stone Law Firm, in Macon, Georgia. She later obtained her paralegal certification and continued working for Mr. Stone for over 30 years, retiring in 2019.
Throughout her lifetime, Karen participated in many organizations, always willing to volunteer for positions that utilized her logistical, organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Her daughters remember many hours logged supporting their extracurricular activities – as a Girl Scout “Cookie Mom,” head fundraiser for class trips, PTA board, and many others. After her daughters were grown, Karen “adopted” the “hockey boys” of the Macon Mayhem, joining the team’s booster club and serving on its executive committee in several different positions, including as its president. Hockey jerseys are welcome (and encouraged) to be worn to Karen’s celebration of life.
Karen was a self-described “lifelong Presbyterian” and was an active member, elder, and long-serving Clerk of Session for Northminster Presbyterian Church. Karen also served as Flint River Presbytery’s Montreat Coordinator for the past several years helping the youth of the Flint River Presbytery experience her “happy place.”
Karen was an avid runner, a hobby that she came to later in life, training for and running her first half marathon at age 56. Karen was inspired to start running by the Team in Training program, which raises funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Over the years, she participated in 13 races with Team in Training, raising over $54,000 for LLS. Other hobbies included scrapbooking, reading, counted cross-stitch, jigsaw puzzles, vacations at Hilton Head, and attending Atlanta Braves & Macon Bacon baseball games.
Karen will be fondly remembered by her daughters, Catherine and Allison Jones, both of Alpharetta, GA; her brother, Donald Boyd of Chapel Hill, NC; and grandchildren, Jasper and S/V Moore. Karen was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Edward Jones of Macon, GA, and her parents, Bernard and Thelma Boyd of Chapel Hill, NC.
