She was one of eight children. She was a graduate of Greenport High School and New York State College for Teachers in Albany where she earned her Master’s degree and a BA in English and Social Studies. She began her teaching career as the first African-American teacher to serve on the faculty of the Andrew S. Draper Central School in Schenevus, NY in 1951 and married her late husband the Reverend James M. Jones on December 26, 1954. After taking years off to raise their three children, she resumed teaching at Montclair High School in New Jersey in 1970, retiring in 1991. In retirement she cared for her husband who succumbed to Parkinson’s Disease in 2013 and after herself becoming disabled in 2014, spent her remaining years with her children in Macon, GA.
She is survived by her children Nathlie E. Jones-Urquhart (Marvin) of Chesapeake, VA, Dr. Valerie Jones-Freeman of Macon and James M. Jones Jr. of Macon; grandchildren, Marvin Urquhart Jr. and Brandi Urquhart, siblings of the late Marcus Urquhart.
