Born on April 16, 1935, in Oklahoma City, OK, he grew up in Oklahoma City and attended both Oklahoma City University and the University of Oklahoma. In 1959, Richard graduated with a Pre-Med degree and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was commissioned into the Army Medical Service Corps, where he served from 1960 to 1983, earning the prestigious Legion of Merit and numerous other military honors. The Army also sent him back to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a master’s degree in computer science and studied toward his PhD. Richard married Margaret Catherine Robbins on December 28, 1959. Together, they enjoyed a life of travel and adventure, with the Army taking them to assignments in Maine, Hawaii, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Maryland, Germany, and Texas. During their travels, Richard, Margaret, and their children made the most of every opportunity, from enjoying the beautiful beaches of Hawaii’s to skiing the amazing slopes of Europe. Richard and Margaret were a devoted couple, sharing both the challenges and joys of life together, and always giving thanks to God for their many blessings. Richard was first and foremost a dedicated husband and father consistently leading his family to honor God. He was a loving and consistent presence in the lives of his three children, always available to lend a helping hand, whether rebuilding cars and motorcycles with his eldest son, assisting his daughter with her horses, or being a reliable tennis partner for his youngest son. Through it all, Richard was there cheering his children on in all of their endeavors and as they became adults he remained a trusted advisor and steadfast supporter. His love and guidance extended to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with Richard playing a pivotal and positive role in their lives as well. In 1985, Richard and Margaret relocated to Lizella, GA, when Richard took a position with Charter Medical Corporation. He later transitioned to teaching and became an IT instructor at Macon State College in 1993, where he also developed the IT Internship Program. Richard
enjoyed teaching and built lasting relationships with his students until he retired in 2004 to spend more time with his family and continue pursuing his personal interests.. As an active resident of the Middle Georgia Community, Richard was involved in a variety of organizations. He was a member of Ingleside Baptist Church for the last 13 years and previously he was a 30 year member of Mabel White Baptist Church, where he served as an elder and a deacon, taught Sunday school and played in the orchestra. Richard also played clarinet in the Middle Georgia Concert Band, volunteered with Save A Life (now Caring Solutions), and he was a long time member of Toastmasters International where he received numerous accolades for his public speaking skills. In his later years, Richard continued to enjoy playing tennis, remaining an enthusiastic player well into his 80s. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Mildred Malone, and his older brothers, COL Wesley Malone and LTJG Jean Malone. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret, his three children: LtCol (Ret) Jean Thomas Malone (Betty), Linda “Lindsey” Malone-Spangler, and Richard Lee Malone, Jr. (Brenda); his ten grandchildren: Matthew, Megan, Brettlin, Tessa, Noelle, Jamielee, Mia, Sean (Susan), Bradley, and Madeline; and his two great-grandchildren, Silas and Liam.
