Sue F. Thornton

Sue Fitts Thornton, 85, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2014 at her residence. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 10 at 11 a.m. at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street with Rev. James Duke officiating. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery (North Gate). The family will greet friends on Friday, January 9 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Methodist Children’s Home, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon 31204.

Sue was born in Macon to the late Frank Cary and Mildred Malone Fitts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard B. Thornton. Sue was a member of Vineville United Methodist Church and the Mack Anthony Sunday School Class. She attended Burke Elementary, graduated from Mount deSales Academy and attended Mercer University. While at Mercer she worked on the student paper “Cluster” and yearbook and was in the Mercer Glee Club. She was a member of Chi Omega So. Sue was a member of Idle Hour County Club and Northwoods Garden Club. She was President of Panhellenic Mercer. Sue was in the Tuesday and Thursday Nite Bridge Club. She loved music, reading, playing the piano and gardening.

Survivors include her children, Rick (Kari) Thornton of Macon, Mike (Renee) Thornton of Macon and Terry (Pat) Rabun of Macon; grandchildren, Josh Thornton, Jesse Thornton, Ben Thornton, Kate Thornton, Jake Thornton, Caroline (Tim) Rabun Wood, Rebekah Rabun, Tamara (Nate) York , Nikki (Emily) Ussery; great-grandchildren, Anderson and Evelyn York; brother, Cary Fitts, Jr. of Birmingham, AL; aunt, Frances Pratt of Macon and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would especially like to thank the caregivers; Sheila Brooks, Dolly Estrada, Bessie Quinn, Joann Thomas, Phyllis Wooten, Vivian Wynes, and the late Patricia Fagon.

Honorary pallbearers are Sue’s grandsons; Ben, Jake, Jesse, Josh and Nikki.
