Throughout his life, wherever he lived, Jerry carried with him a Midwestern sensibility: the simple values, friendliness and fair-mindedness derived from an idyllic childhood in his hometown of Proctor, a tiny town in northern Minnesota. Everyone he met was touched by his warmth and his gentle, compassionate ways. His delight in babies and small children was boundless. In his extensive civic involvement, he was known for being a calm and thoughtful presence and a voice of reason.

Following retirement, he served ten years as a Democratic Selectman in Madison and twelve years on the Scranton Library Board of Directors. He was actively involved with various boards and commissions, including: Inland Wetlands, Planning and Zoning, Senior Citizens’, Police Commission, Friends of Madison Youth, and many others.
