She graduated top of her class at Xavier High School and later attended the University of Rhode Island.
While vacationing in New Hampshire, she was named Miss Hampton Beach and ended up meeting her future husband there, Charles Maurer. That evening, Charlie declared that he was going to marry her, and so he did. They married and moved into a home in Charlie's hometown, Madison, CT, where they raised three daughters.
For several years, Marilyn taught Creative Dramatics in the Guilford school system. She then decided to try her hand in real estate and, after becoming a salesperson, soon opened her own real estate brokerage company in 1969 called Maurer Real Estate. The building was owned by her husband and located on Scotland Ave. Madison’s Bar Bouche restaurant is currently located there.
At the time, Marilyn was one of very few female Brokers in a mostly male dominated field. She became one of the most prominent Brokers on the shoreline, involved in thousands of transactions and specializing in Waterfront and Water oriented properties along the Connecticut Shoreline and up the Connecticut River. One year, Town and Country Magazine declared Maurer Real Estate the top real estate company on the Connecticut shoreline.
Marilyn loved traveling. She went to Egypt, Malaysia, many countries in Europe (Ireland was her favorite), up the Amazon River, and out to the Galapagos Islands.
Her greatest love was for her two grandchildren Alex and Margot, who she spoiled completely!
Her interests also included playing Bridge (she was an excellent player), theatre, antiques, home decor, gardening, and most of all the town of Madison.
Marilyn obtained her pilot's license at the former Griswold Airport. She loved flying over the family house on the corner of East Wharf and Middle Beach and tipping her wings as her family stood outside on the lawn.
She was a member of the Madison Beach Club, The Winter Club, and The Congregational Church.
She is survived by her daughters Mary Maurer of Madison CT and Jane Maurer(Harlan Reiniger)of Marblehead Massachusetts; her grandson Alexander Reiniger of Marblehead, MA and granddaughter Margot Johnson of Tiburon, CA.
Her husband Charles and her daughter Sara Maurer (Gregory Johnson) predeceased her.
Services will be held March 1, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. at the First Congregational Church of Madison.
We would like to thank the nurses and staff at Aaron Manor for all of their help.
In lieu of flowers, Donations can be made in Marilyn’s name to the Madison Congregational Church.
