Brenda Kaye Keesee Humphrey, beloved wife of Mark Humphrey, beloved daughter of the late Samuel F. Keesee, and Kathryn M. Keesee, beloved daughter-in-law of the late Eleanor Humphrey, beloved sister to Carolyn Keesee Fitzgerald and husband Wayne of Lynchburg, beloved sister to Mary Keesee, Helen Keesee, Nancy Keesee Navarre and husband Terry, Richard Keesee and wife Donna, and Elizabeth (Libby) Keesee, all of Madison Heights, as well as two nieces, three nephews, six great nieces, two great nephews, three great-great nieces and one great-great nephew, passed from this life on December 9, 2018 after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer. Her loving husband Mark was with her every step of her journey and was at her side, with her sister Carol, when she passed. Her family is grateful to Mark for the thirty plus years of deep happiness that Brenda shared with him. This dark haired beauty of a girl, whose soft voice belied her strength of steel, was a lover of green and growing things, and flowers of all sort, as well as all animals.
Born on September 1, 1951, she was baptized by Rev. Hugh Bumgarner into Madison Heights Baptist Church as a young girl. She attended Madison Heights Elementary School (Phelps Road) and was a graduate of the Super Fine Class of 1969 at Amherst County High School. Upon graduation, Brenda was overjoyed to be employed as a secretary at Fidelity National Bank. She later worked as a legal secretary at several local law firms, as well as Caskie Paper Company. She also served as a medical transcriptionist for Centra Health and took great pride in her work. Her strong work ethic allowed her to work for many years in spite of physical pain. She was a gift giver extraordinaire. She gifted fresh cut roses, chocolate, sofas, chairs, jewelry and the best books ever. She gave these gifts even when it was a struggle to do so. Her gifts made one feel rich – not because of their material value, but because they were statements of her love. Brenda was a gifted cook and loved sharing with everyone. Brenda had the gift of gratitude. She and her husband Mark, and her family are grateful to Dr. Emily Jenkins, the Allen B. Pearson Cancer Center and all those who served her there, as well as her surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Poletti, who said she was the strongest woman he ever knew. Brenda called him her miracle doctor. Brenda never failed to thank all of her doctors, nurses, therapists, technicians, LPN’s, CNA’s, and cafeteria workers because she was grateful for their service to her. She was especially grateful to her home health nurses, Stephanie and Donna, for their love and devotion above and beyond duty.
Left to mourn Brenda are her loving husband, Mark, her beloved mother, Kathryn, her elder sister, Carol, who was the best partner she could have had during this long and arduous journey, her remaining sisters and loving brother who love and will miss her dearly, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, and a dear friend, Diane, who visited Brenda daily for the past decade.
So Brenda, as you walk in the garden with Jesus, we know that you are walking with our father Samuel, as well as your menagerie of beloved cats and dogs. You are now in the hands of the Lord, where you most deservedly ought to be, but you remain with us as well, you will never be gone from us.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the American Cancer Society or to Monelison Animal Clinic, Dr. Charles Budzyn. Upon Brenda’s request, there will be no service.
