

Doris Leigh Vess, 78, of Monroe, passed away, Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Henry “Hank” Ruffner Vess, Jr. Born June 19, 1935, in Big Island, she was the daughter of the late Robert Addison and the late Inez Downey Addison.
Doris was a retired housekeeper for Eagle Eyrie, and a member of Big Island Baptist Church, where she was also a member of the WMU in which she sent out cards to the ill in the church. Doris was also a devoted member of the Big Island Baptist Church Choir.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by one sister, Sue Williams.
In addition to her husband, Doris is survived by her sons Henry Ruffner Vess, III and his wife Christine Walroth of Cashton , WI and Russell Franklin Vess and his wife Pam of Big Island; three grandchildren, Jeremiah William Vess and his wife Kari, Russell Franklin Vess, Jr. and Ashley Lynn Vess; two great-grandchildren, Carson Vess and Gracelynn Coleman; one sister, June Spence and her husband Bobby of Big Island; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted, 11 a.m., Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Big Island Baptist Church with the Rev. Mickey Ryan officiating. Interment will follow at Big Island Cemetery.
The family will receive friends, 6-7:30 p.m., Friday, February 21, 2014, at Big Island Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Big Island Baptist Church Choir.
