

Earnest Carroll Johnson, 81, of Lynchburg and formerly of Madison Heights, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2019 after a long illness and complications of Guillain-Barre. His family has taken care of Earnest for the past 11 years during his illness at home. He was the husband of Linda Wood Johnson for 58 years.
Born on September 15, 1937 in Nelson County, he was the son of the late Walter Earnest Johnson and the late Josephine Campbell Johnson. Earnest served our country in the United States Air Force and retired from the City of Lynchburg as a firefighter after 32 years of service. After retirement, Earnest worked as a greeter with the Madison Heights Walmart for 11 years. He enjoyed fishing, working in his yard, and spending time with his family and two granddaughters. He was a member of Living Word Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Marie Sprouse.
Earnest is survived by his wife, Linda Johnson; daughter, Teresa Francis and husband David; son, Michael Johnson; two grandchildren, Samantha Francis and Devin Francis; brothers, Walter Johnson and E. Ray Johnson; sisters, Sylvia Johnson and Sandra Weast; close family friend, Beverly Littlejohn; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Matt Short officiating. Interment will follow at Briarwood Memorial Gardens with military honors by the Altavista American Legion Post 36/ Gretna Post 232.
