

Edith Louise Mays Almond Deaton, 80, of Madison Heights, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late James Dalton Almond and George Preston Deaton, Sr.
Born on March 4, 1933 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late David Warren and Nita Campbell Mays.
Mrs. Deaton was a member of the Madison Heights Baptist Church. She had a deep love for the joys in life and she was always smiling. Many of her joys included flowers, gardening, going to the beach, playing putt-putt, dancing, country music, and her church. She also loved her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, she is preceded in death by a brother, David Warren Mays, Jr.
She is survived by her children, Margaret A. Gaddy and husband Roger of Norfolk, James D. Almond and wife Cheryl of Lansing, MI, Betty A. Thomas and husband Angus “Tom” of Madison Heights, George P Deaton, Jr. of Madison Heights, and Valerie D. Newcomb and husband Roger Newcomb, Jr. of Forest; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and two brothers, James B. Mays and Curtis Mays both of Madison Heights.
The family would like to thank Fairmont Crossing, especially the Cedar Ridge Staff, Dr. Hardison, Dr. Truett, and Allison Brookes for their kind and caring support during Mrs. Deaton illness.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 AM on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. Interment will follow at Meade Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Whitten Monelison Chapel from 7 to 9 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
