

Born November 16, 1919 in Belington, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Emery Clayton Phillips and Minnie Parks Phillips and was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary M. Phillips and a daughter, Sandra Swift. Elmer was the third of seven children and was also preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. He retired from Lynchburg Foundry after thirty-one years of service and continued to work for many years after retiring. Elmer was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1941 until 1945 and was on Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. Elmer was a proud man of few words. He was a good man that loved and cared a lot about his family and never expected anything in return.
Elmer is survived by four children, Kay Wright (Wayne), Eugene, Steve, and Jimmy Phillips (Carolyn); Elmer’s special partner of twenty-eight years, Carolyn and her family, Lisa Banton Bennington (Benny), Brennan and Jordan Banton, and Beth, Brooke, and Dylan Wood; a very special friend, Kim Mays and the love of his life, “Little Elvis”. They loved him like a father and grandfather.
Elmer is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jennifer Moore (C.T.) who Elmer raised like a daughter, Adam Wright (Stephanie), Angel Swift (Dale), J.R. Swift, Tracey Miller, Dwain Phillips, Chris Phillips, Kirstie Phillips; twenty three great grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 9, 2016 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Dr. Todd Blake officiating. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow at the Monroe Church of God Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
