

George Allen Watson, 89, of Monroe, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at the Virginia Baptist Hospital after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He was the husband of Hallie Sands Watson for 64 years.
Born in Botetourt Co., he was the son of the late Vernon Herbert Watson and the late Mary Toms Watson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Carroll Watson and Billy Watson and two sisters, Mary Alice Morrison and Lillian White.
Allen was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and a retired mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service after over 30 years of service. He was a member of the Amherst-Monroe Ruritan Club and a former employee of Morris Orchards. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He loved to share the vegetables from his garden.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Nancy W. Hunt and her husband, Dennis, of Concord; one son, Tim A. Watson and his wife, Brenda, of Monroe; one brother, Lewis Elbyrne Watson and his wife, Jean, of Margate, FL; two sisters, Vernelle Overman and her husband, Ed and Isabel Creasey and her husband, Roy, all of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Jerry Hunt and his wife, Rhonda, Allyson Adkins and her husband, Jerry, Tina Hogate, Kristy Watson and Mark Watson and his wife, Brooke and six great grandchildren, Jessie Hunt, Zachary Watson, Jason Hunt, Shyann Adkins, Jenna Watson and Reese Watson.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at Whitten Monelison Chapel. A private interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec.22, 2010, at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
