

Born September 19, 1926, in Amherst, he was a son of the late William and Sarah Jane Mawyer Henson. He was also preceded in death by a son, Harry "Lee" Henson, four brothers, and two sisters.
Mr. Henson was a United Sates Army WW II veteran, having served in Germany and France. He was retired from Lynchburg Foundry after 35 years of service as a machinist.
He was an avid outdoorsman, loved working on lawnmowers in his workshop, and working in his garden. He never met a stranger.
Survivors also include three daughters, Shirley H. Scruggs, of Staunton, Rose Marie H. Riffe and husband Daryl, of Madison Heights, and Sherrie Henson and fiancé Tony, of Staunton; two stepchildren, Jo Anne Dowdy, of Evington, and Thomas Neighbors, of Madison Heights; a brother, Freddie E. Henson and wife Cotton, of Lynchburg; special friends, Gordon and Barbara Jean Campbell, of Lynchburg, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 19, 2010, in the mausoleum chapel, in Fort Hill Memorial Park, by the Rev. Gary Vernon. Military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post 16.
The family will receive friends Thursday, February 18, 2010, from 7-9:00 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence of his brother, Freddie Henson, 200 Cabell Street, in Lynchburg.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Virginia Veterans Care Center, 1 East Alzheimer's Unit, 4550 Shenandoah Avenue Northwest, Roanoke, VA 24017.
The family would like to thank Mr. Henson's nurse, Heather, at Virginia Veterans Care Center, and to his nurse, Marcie, at Gentle Shepherd Hospice, for the care given to their father.
