John William Hurst

Born April 20, 1920 in Jersey City, N.J. he was a son of the late John Patrick and Sarah Lee Hurst. He retired as manager of Manasquan Wine Shop after 35 years. He was a W.W. II Army veteran.

Mr. Hurst was the oldest member of the VFW Post 9877 in Amherst Co. He was also a member of the color guard, DAV and the American Legion Post # 16. Known as the “flag man” he would donate and hang flags from the parking meters around the town of Amherst and also travel to local cemeteries to place miniature flags at veterans’ gravesites.

Mr. Hurst is survived by a daughter, Sherry Lee H. Kane of Amherst; two grandsons, Jonathan Daniel Kane and his wife, Emily, David Paul Kane and his wife, Danielle and great-grandson, Taylor Daniel Kane all of Amherst.

The family will receive friends Monday, December 26, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

A graveside service will be held at Amherst Cemetery Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. conducted by the American Legion Post #16.
