

Born July 1, 1937, in Piney River, she was a daughter of the late Cleveland Charlie Thacker Sr., and Evelyn Mays Thacker. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Vera Mays Shelton; and a brother, Cleveland “Buddy” Thacker Jr.
Mrs. Mays was retired from CVTC, after 30 years of service. She was a member of Bethel Church of the Brethren, in Arrington, and a former member of the Rebekah’s. She loved her family, having company over, good food, Gospel music, and game shows.
Survivors also include three children, Donna Mitchell and husband David, of Rustburg, Charles Mays and wife Dianne, of Madison Heights, and Jennifer Wood and husband Troy, of Monroe; three sisters, Mary Arthur and husband Alvin, of Bedford, Rebecca Gunter and husband Dallas, of Mulberry, MD, and Elizabeth Curd, of Lynchburg; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Thacker; 6 grandchildren, Erica Mays, Brook Campbell, Joshua Mays and wife Kelly, Jeremy Mays and wife Rachel, Adam, and Robert Clark; and 11 great-grandchildren, Lacey Mays, Zachary Smith, Kaleb Mays, Mackenzie Rivera, Bethany Mays, Jacob Jerina, Julian Clark, Madison Clark, Jordan Kiger, Ethan Kiger, and Conner Freeman, to whom she was affectionately called “Big Granny”; and two unborn great-grandsons, Mason Mays, and Chase Freeman; extended family, Brandon Turner, and Patty and James Reese; special friend, Joyce Austin, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends tonight, Tuesday, July 10, 2012, from 6-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home by the Rev. Randy Harlow, and the Rev. Jacob Uthrop. Interment will follow in Arrington Cemetery.
