Born on February 7, 1947, in Agricola, VA, he was the son of the late Haywood Lee Duff and Mittie Johns Duff. He was also preceded in death by four brothers—Robert Jr., Hayward, Joe, and Mack—and one sister, Jean Duff.
Nelson was a retired sheet metal mechanic who devoted 53 years of skilled and loyal service to Virginia Roofing. Throughout his life, he was known for his remarkable generosity and gentle spirit.
Nelson was the kind of man who would lend a helping hand to anyone—family, friend, or stranger—and truly would give the shirt off his back if someone needed it. His kindness was steady, sincere, and woven into everything he did.
He loved his family with a depth that was unmistakable. Nelson adored his wife, Lecy, and cherished the life they built together over 59 years. His children were his pride and joy, and he poured his heart into being a devoted husband and father. Family gatherings, simple moments, and time spent together brought him the greatest happiness.
Nelson also had many passions that brought him joy. He was an avid bowler, and spent countless hours at the lanes, honing his skills and enjoying the camaraderie of friends. He also had a deep love for bluegrass music. He and his wife, Lecy, spent countless weekends dancing together and flat footing to their favorite tunes. Those memories of dancing and music are some of the fondest in his life.
He also enjoyed the everyday pleasures that reflected who he was—playing cards with friends, talking and laughing with loved ones, admiring old classic cars, and following the excitement of horse racing. He lived his life with warmth, loyalty, and a quiet strength that touched everyone around him.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lecy H. Duff; three children, Lisa Renay Duff, Dawn Michelle Duff, and Nelson King Duff Jr. (Terry Dey); one sister, Deborah Hensley (Dave); one grandchild, Victoria; one great-grandchild, Katrina; and his special friend, Gail McCoole. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., also at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with Cynthia Branham officiating. Burial will follow at Amherst Cemetery.
Nelson’s legacy of kindness, generosity, and deep love for his family will never be forgotten. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
