

Samuel Meredith Metts, Sr., “Big Sam”, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at his home in Elon. Born May 26, 1935, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Harry C. Metts and the late Regent Hudson Metts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betsy Duke” Trevillian Metts and two sisters, Hazel Duff and Janice Newland.
He was retired from the United States Post Office after 32 years of service and after retirement, he spent 22 years with Morris Orchards being fondly known as the “Apple Man”. He served his country as a Seaman in the United States Navy Reserves.
He is survived by three children, Samuel M. Metts, Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Gladys, Beth Metts Freeman and her husband, Dale, of Monroe and Robert L. Metts and his wife, Patty, of Concord; his grandchildren and great grandchildren who lovingly called him Papa; a brother, Harry C. Metts, Jr.; his companion and dear friend, Martha Van Lear; his devoted loving caregiver, Nancy Short and her husband, David; his dear friends Jim and Carol Charles, Scott and Judy Barnes and Hazel Campbell, who’s deep friendship will never be forgotten. Our family appreciates and thanks the wonderful people of Elon Baptist Church for their love and care shown to our father.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 9, 2012, at the Elon Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Steve Tyree officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, June 8, 2012, at the Elon Baptist Church and at other times at the homes of his children.
