

Daughter of Ira Lee Smailes, Sr. and Lillian Nelson Smailes. Margaret was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Samuel "Tubby" Hodge; daughter, Margie Lea Pipithsuksunt; brothers, Ira Lee, Jr., Bobby and Frank; and sister, Marietta Wiley.
Survivors include daughters, Judy Lacy Taylor and Peggy Lacy Short of Charleston; son, Buck Lacy of Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren, Lea Ann Pipithsuksunt, Stephen (Linda) Pipithsuksunt, Samantha (Stephen) Edens, Cassie Taylor, Jason Lacy (fiancee, Morgan), Jenna Lacy, Katee Short and Lillian Short; great-grandchildren, Taylor Ann Smith, Jacob and MacKenzie Vance, Isabelle and Gabrielle Edens, Mary Jane Pipithsuksunt and Laina Shaba; brothers, Jim of Charleston and Charles of Homewood, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. She is also survived by her beloved chihuahua, Duke.
Margaret was formerly employed by McMillan Hospital, Charleston General Hospital, A&P Foods and she retired from the Quincy Kroger as head deli clerk. She then lived in Melbourne, Fla., for 20 years until July 2014, at which time she returned to Charleston to be with her daughters and their families.
Margaret enjoyed crocheting, making quilts, collecting shells at the beach, keeping in touch with family and many friends via Facebook and sitting in her garage watching the world go by.
As per Mom’s wishes, her remains have been cremated and a memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, March 14, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with the Rev. Earl Cochran officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service. Inurnment will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
The family would like to thank the staff at Dunbar Center for their care and compassion for Mom during her stay there. A special thanks to Mom’s "roomie," Brenda Hawkins and her family, who so lovingly became an integral part of our extended family.
