Cathy went to Springfield High School and Marjorie Webster Junior College and worked as a dental assistant where she met William Sutton (Bill) and started a family. They were married for 55 years. She has two daughters and worked as a teacher’s aid and very involved parent in Delaware County, PA before moving to Loveladies, NJ full time in the late 80s. On the bay in Loveladies, she loved crabbing and gardening, cooking and entertaining. She and Bill also spent time on Sanibel Island, FL where she enjoyed shelling.
In New Jersey, Cathy was a member of the Barnegat Light Yacht Club and was involved in youth swimming and sailing in the 80s and 90s. Since the 2000s, she was an active member of the Garden Club of Long Beach Island and President of the Club from 2000-2001. She won awards for her flower arrangements and participated each year in the LBI Holiday Tour of Homes. Cathy was responsible for the landscape and maintenance of The Edith Duff Gwinn Garden in Barnegat Light, NJ. She was also very active with seniors organizing garden therapy events at Ocean County Senior Services. She loved this work in the community.
She is survived by her husband Bill Sutton, daughters Susan (Sue) Sutton and Stephanie Walsh, son in law Doug MacLaughlin, grandchildren Fiona MacLaughlin, Tyler Walsh, Carly MacLaughlin, Connor Walsh, and Spencer Walsh, sister Ruth O’Hara, niece Lori Naisby and nephew Michael O’Hara and their families. Many, many other nieces and nephews and friends of the family consider her a second mother to them. She was Mommom, Dee Dee and Mama Sutton, very generous with her time talking through issues, helping to shape our lives, and always on our side!
A memorial service for Cathy will be held from 1-5pm on Weds May 22 at Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home located at 10 Hilliard Dr, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. The funeral service will begin at 3pm.
