I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Richard Saldibar Sr. Richard truly was the type of person that made you feel like part of the family. When I first visited him at his home in NJ, he was so excited to take me to all of his favorite spots and truly get the Barnegat experience. Richard also took me to see New York City, he shared so many of his stories of growing up in New York, he also took us to see the Christmas Rockets show. He made me feel like part of his Family. I will always have love in my heart for Richard Saldibar Sr. Thank You for all the great experiences. Bailey

I never knew him as Smokey, but I knew him as a great member of the track team at St. Peter's on Staten Island. He was contender, for sure.

I was on the track team for one year only, my freshman year, but he was a stand out even then.

Rest in peace, Richie.

Saldibar family- I am so sad to hear about your dad. He was such a nice man, was my regular customer at the Barnegat Wells Fargo and would always talk about his kids he was so proud of. Whenever he would visit he would update me on the latest xo I will pray for your comfort. Rest In Peace Mr Saldibar.

Character is seen and not talked about. A little story: Years ago during a softball game our ten year old neighbor Tim, ran over, excited to ask Richard about track. Obviously something in the S.I. advance caught his eye. After game I saw Richard take him aside to talk to him. I later found out that Richard , not only explained track, but took the extra step to take him to his Track practice and allowed him to practice with him. little Tim could talk about nothing else for weeks. This simple act showed the character of Richard. He was fully giving of himself to help others . This was the young Richard.....He never changed Love you Richard, your brother Jess.

I have many fond memories of running with Rich at St. Peter's. Although two years behind in class, Rich was always friendly and supportive, and a leader by doing on the track. In the spring of 1967 up at Cardinal Spellman in the Bronx, St. Peter's won the Christian Brothers Championship 60 to 59.5. Rich anchored our two mile relay team (Mike McCarthy, myself, Don Gavrity, and Rich) to 2nd significantly contributing to the win. I am very grateful to have seen Rich at the last couple of Saint Peter's track reunions.

Richard Saldibar and I had the most wonderful times together running for St. Peter's in Staten Island,NY. Richard was a year a head of me in school. Not only were we team mates but wonderful friends. We talked about getting our school clothes at Lobel's in Port Richmond,Going to Gene's for the best Italian Cuisine in Port Richmond. .We won many races at Port Richmond HS in Staten Island for St. Peter's H.S.. My fondest memory is when Richie pushed me to run a big race at the Eastern States at Randall's Island ,NY where we broke 8 minutes in the two mile relay and set the S.I record. We remained steadfast friends. In certain times in my life , as we grew older, Richard gave me the wisdom I needed. He was a wonderful friend that I will miss dearly.
My dear friend Richard Saldibar.
Love you forever

Sometimes it seems that what happened 50+ years ago is something that happened just yesterday.
I was an insecure sophomore runner at St. Peter's when Richie was a senior, and one of the best high school runners, not only at St. Peter's, but in the entire city of New York .

Rich always had time to help out and encourage awkward people like me.
I'm so glad that we were able to reconnect these past few years at the St. Peter's Alumni reunions. I did get a chance to tell him thanks , and I'm forever grateful for that .

ANOTHER GREAT GUY GONE HOME TO GOD.

Rest in Peace ,Smokey !
