

Born in Plainfield, he resided in Pittsburgh for five years, but was primarily a lifelong resident of New Jersey.
A graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA in 1963, he enlisted in the US Army in Yuma, AZ. Dick honorably served our country from in the US Army from 1963-1966. He began his surety career as a trainee with Chubb & Son, Inc, with his last assignment as a surety manager in Philadelphia. He went on to spend two years with INA (CIGNA) in their home office Surety Department and two years with the Fidelity and Deposit Company in their Philadelphia branch.
In 1981, he became an account executive in the Bond Department at North American Reinsurance Company, advancing to Vice President. In 1994, he joined G.J. Sullivan Company, the leading reinsurance broker in North America.
Upon retirement, Dick kept active and loved traveling, wine tasting, collecting modern art, spending time at his home in Florida, and fishing. Dick also loved boating, and was a member of the Spray Beach Yacht Club for over 60 years, where he eventually served as Commodore. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family.
Dick was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Eleanor; his brother, Robert; and his beloved daughter, Jennifer.
Surviving are his loving wife of 10 years, Evelyn; his children: Christine Edwards and her husband Boyd, Cheryl Voorhees and her husband Robert; his grandchildren: Katherine Upshaw and her husband Bryan, Matthew McKenna, Alexander Voorhees, and Abagail Voorhees; a great-grandson, Bryson Upshaw; his step-children: Theodore Smolinski and his wife Lindsay, Thomas Smolinski and his wife Lauren, and Michael & Daniel Smolinski, Anne Skinner, Cynthia Seney, and Steven Skinner; and his step-grandchildren: Andrew, Ryan, Emilia, Caroline, Tyler, Camryn, Mary, and Russell Seney; and many other loving extended family members and friends.
All services were held privately under the direction of Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home, Manahawkin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dick’s name to the Spray Beach Chapel, 2309 Beach Ave, Long Beach, NJ 08008.
