Dear Linda & family- I just found out about Steve’s passing.  My sincere condolences to you & your family. He was a great person & friend when we started our careers at Becton Dickinson.  I remember the time we all drank his famous margaritas at your apartment on Franklin Turnpike.  That was a long time ago. God bless Steve & your family.

Though I didn’t have the privilege of knowing Steve personally, his presence left a lasting impact on me. When I first entered the biopharmaceutical world without any background or experience, working as a contractor at Sanofi, I often saw him in the cafeteria. Despite his leadership status and the enormity of his work, Steve would sit among us—the workers, the technicians—with a kindness and humility that spoke volumes about his character.

He was simple, respectful, and genuinely humble. He never made anyone feel less than, regardless of their role or position. In fact, his demeanor and presence encouraged people like me to dream bigger, to aspire not just to professional success, but to carry ourselves with the same grace and integrity that he did.

While I never had the chance to work closely with him, everything he projected was positive. His leadership wasn’t just about his title or responsibilities—it was about how he treated others, with warmth and respect. I feel a deep sadness at his passing, as the world has lost a truly great human being.

To his beloved wife Linda, his children Stephen and Carrie, and his cherished grandchildren, as well as his colleagues and friends who worked closely with him—I extend my deepest sympathies. I hope you find comfort in the beautiful memories you shared and in knowing how many lives Steve touched, even from afar. His legacy of kindness, humility, and leadership will live on in all of us who were fortunate enough to witness it.

My most heartfelt condolences to Steve’s family. I accompany you in your loss during this terribly difficult time. 

I had the opportunity to work with Steve during my time in Genzyme in Ridgefield from 2004 to 2011.

There are so many memories that I have of him in which he shows his outstanding ability to reach people with his leadership and good heart.

One of my most vivid memories of Steve was when the Ridgefield site was under construction to extend into 4 floors from the one floor we had at the time. I recall Steve called everyone to step out to sign our names in the construction columns that were going to be used in the new building. Everyone stepped out, personnel from the warehouse, the aseptic core, customer service, purchasing, quality, etc.  I could see in Steve’s face his happiness, and pride about  being able to share this great accomplishment. I remember the faces of the colleagues that were signing their names, all smiling, Steve chatting about the construction progress and the plans for the site, how long it will take to complete, and what projects we will bring. He had so much passion and optimism for the future. I could see he was so proud of the entire Ridgefield team. There were many underlying messages that I took from just this instance alone about Steve’s leadership.

I will remember Steve as one of a kind leader; a person that taught me many lessons that I will continue carrying on and passing on. 

May Steve’s memories live forever in our hearts.

I've only known Steve for 5 years but he became such an important part of my like. I miss him dearly.

My Grandfather would say, "You can judge a man by the people that surround him". Steve was the center of an orbit of:  
-A great loving family
I witnessed the infamous saga of the pool - him wrestling with Long Beach ordinances and contractors.and him looking forward to the time his grandchildren can dive in.; 
-Life-long friends from Paterson;
Even though life and careers drag you down different roads he never lost the closeness with the Paterson gang. I've heard many a story of young-man antics but also as much how Steve would always step in and help when needed; and,
-Professional colleagues
Steve was a leader in a high stress industry that no doubt required tough decisions of hiring & firing and late hours. But those colleagues all became friends with unshakable admiration for Steve.

Roseanne & I joined Steve & Linda and the Paterson bunch last Spring on a cruise in Hawaii. They are great people and we had a great time. But all along there was Steve looking over his shoulder making sure we  were included and felt welcome.

I will never forget Steve and it will mostly be little prompts such as when I am driving back over the Causeway and trying to catch the three-light-sequence. ( A Mottola rule; You can go as slow as 10 mph to avoid touching the brake.) Or when I hear his voice when I am once again hacking out of a sand trap ("Too much wrist!"). 

Roseanne's and my heart hurt for Steve's family. And we wish them the comfort of warm memories.

I want to express my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. In the short five years I had the privilege of knowing Steve, he created a wealth of cherished memories. He was truly the glue that brought us all together, making our time on the golf course enjoyable and memorable.

Steve inspired so many of us with his passion for golf, his knowledge of equipment, and his love for cars. Above all, his devotion to his family was evident and deeply admirable.

Though our time together was brief, Steve made a lasting impact on my life and on the lives of many others. He will be missed dearly. Treasuring the memories forever.

I used to remind Steve that he shared his birthday with two other American greats, Babe Ruth and Ronald Reagan.  In many ways it was so fitting that this was so.  Steve had the magnetic charisma of The Babe, and shared the outstanding leadership and inspirational qualities as The Gipper.  I fondly remember all of the times that I got to spend with Steve over the years, and give thanks to his cherished family for having shared him with us.  Steve and his family will always remain in my prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.  Stephen was a great friend, leader and mentor.   There are many great memories.

Am sending my deepest and sincerest condolences to the Mottola family. I have so many great memories of Steve. He was humble, positive, authentic, a great leader, showed concern for others and so much more. Some of the most heartfelt memories I have of Steve is him always with his calculator. When I saw him coming I knew to get ready ☺️. We would calculate things differently but come up with the same result. At work, he would tell me, “come on Sandy let’s go for a walk.” We would walk over to the production lines and conversate. He gave some of the best advice. It was so hard writing this but at the same time put a smile on my face thinking back on these memories. You were truly something else Steve and will always be. Your presence was truly invaluable and your parting has created a void that will not be easily filled. You are truly missed Steve.

Extending my deepest condolences and prayers to Steve’s family during this challenging time.   I remember starting at Genzyme around Thanksgiving 20 years ago when I first met him.  Fresh on the job and grade levels below Steve’s positional status, it was touching when he came up to me and EVERYONE else on the floor 1-1 to shake hands and converse, wishing all a Happy Thanksgiving.  His connections came from the heart and he had a conversational knack for making all feel at ease while maintaining a genuine interest in listening to others express their stories or viewpoints.  What’s truly phenomenal is he didn’t waver from that approach over time and is the ultimate example of a selfless mentor.  I never have and probably never will experience a better professional experience than at the Site he brilliantly led.  But it extends far beyond competitive accomplishments (Steve would legendarily say that coming in second place means you’re just “the best of the losers”!).  He built and sustained a culture and community that I will always relish and strive to replicate anywhere else.   It was truly a pleasure coming into work despite whatever business obstacles were present. Thank you Steve for inspiring us, what you have accomplished with the Team, and staying in touch with all your valuable professional and personal guidance over the years.  I can’t imagine the deep sorrow his cherished family is experiencing at the moment, Steve always reflected fondly upon family events that occurred over the weekend or what was coming up with them.  I wish his family tremendous strength during this difficult time and am hoping to help however and whenever possible.  Thank you Steve for establishing an impressive legacy, leading your life by example and touching so many people along the way.  We all love you and will dearly miss you.

Steve was not just a remarkable leader, but also an incredible mentor and friend to so many of us. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support made such a profound impact on both our professional and personal lives.

His ability to guide, challenge, and inspire will be missed beyond words. Steve didn’t just lead he cared deeply about each of us, and always took the time to invest in our growth. The lessons he imparted me will continue to shape in my career and personal life.

Praying for God’s peace, comfort, and strength for the Mottola family as we remember Steve on his birthday, February 6th. My most sincere condolences to the Mottola Family.
Steve was a great person, and we will miss him terribly. He had a profound impact on the lives of everyone he met. He was a teacher, mentor, friend and role model.  Steve was a humble and kind person. He was honorable and honest.
Steve was a person that injected challenges and fun in everyday life. He would start a game of catch by throwing a ball around while he discussed objectives for the site. He was always raising the bar, so that we would do better and be stronger. 
We will miss his jokes, mischief, stories, and infectious laughter.

I have known and have been friends with Steve for over 30 years. I have soo many fond memories of our time together. From our days working with Genzyme and our trips to Boston, our midnight road trips to Portland Maine, evening excursions to Mohegan Sun casino, the Oak room in Boston, soo many fun activities. Steve would never let any free time lapse without doing something,
 always on the go!!  Some 25 years ago Steve got me involved in playing golf, I was terrible at golf, but Steve invited me almost ever Saturday to join him, Joe Serico and Joe Donabauer to play. I was terrible but Steve didnt care, he was always so patient, caring, encouraging and always instructing me.....that was Steve Mottola.  I will miss you Steve, miss your smile, miss your laugh and miss your friendship. Forever your friend....Sam

My deepest condolences to Steve’s family during this difficult time. I met Steve in 2006 when I joined Genzyme. He was a true leader and admired by so many. His style of leadership was legendary and did not stop even after he left Sanofi. Besides being an extraordinary leader, it was very clear how much his family meant to him. He was always quick to ask about my family and happily shared photos of his. There were lots of fine qualities about Steve, but what I will always remember is his deep values and dedication for our employees and the patients we served. RIP, Steve. You will be deeply missed by so many.
