Charles (“Charlie”) Stollar, born June 27, 1939 died on March 25, 2025 at age 85. He was born in the Bronx and resided most of his life in Hillside and Randolph, NJ, before settling in Marlboro. He was raised in a bakery, served in the U.S. Army, did a tour in Korea as a medic called “Doc”, and spent 38 years as an educator, administrator, and basketball coach in Parisppany, NJ.
He could often be found sitting on a bench in near and far places, talking to anyone who sat down next to him. He made many friends along the way and remembered none of their names. He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies, doing crossword puzzles on the front porch, playing a mediocre game of golf, cheering (yelling) at the TV during Yankees and Giants games, rescuing countless garage sale treasures, napping on the beach with his mouth open, and frequenting bagel shops.
But there was nothing he loved more than being surrounded by his adoring family, as they teased, bickered, laughed, and assured him that they were doing OK and didn’t need any money (well, maybe a little). Sadly, he did not live to see the day that his kids finally got all their sh*t out of his basement.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen - who kept him alive long past his expiration date - and his children: Stacey Moore and her husband, Donny; Marc Stollar and his significant other, Geri, and his late wife, Wendy; and Sara Deren and her husband, Jon. He was a proud Pop-Pop to Cate, Jake, Lucas, Tyler, Dylan, and Max. He is also survived by his brother, Bill Stollar, and was predeceased by his sister, Joan Gelfand.
He will be remembered for his warmth, love, generosity, humor, and the gratitude he felt for the full and wonderful life he lived.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Mar 28, 2025 at 11:30 am at Beth Israel Cemetery - Sanctuary of Israel, 1098 Woodbridge Center Dr, Woodbridge Township, NJ.
Friends and family are welcome at the Stollars’ home on Friday, 6-8 pm, and Saturday, 10 am-2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Experience Camps for grieving children at www.experiencecamps.org/donate.
