

Herb Schachter was born in NYC on January 9, 1929 and was raised on the lower east side. His parents were immigrants from Europe where his brother and sister were born. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and then worked in the Electronics Design Branch of the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard. He graduated from Oswego State College with a Bachelor of Science teaching degree in Industrial Arts, and later went to school at night and earned a Masters Degree in Education from New York University.
Herb met his wife, Selma, while working at a hotel in the Catskill Mountains during the summer months. They were married on February 10, 1951. Together they had two children, Lisa and Ken, and raised the family on Long Island.
He was employed by the City of New York Board of Education and taught in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Herb became an Assistant Principal and Supervisor. Ultimately, he retired and eventually moved to New Jersey.
Herb lived a long healthy life always making others happy until he passed away on January 11, 2026 at the age of 97. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Selma, and their daughter Lisa Sokol and their son Ken Schachter with their spouses Barry Sokol and Marla Schachter. Herb has five grandchildren: Emily, Peri, Ithan, Jamie, and Darren along with Emily’s husband Matt Stein and Peri’s husband Andrew Orlando and three great-grandchildren, Lenora Stein, and Emmett and Felicity Orlando. Family was the most important aspect of his life. Herb was a remarkable and talented man whose life deserves to be celebrated.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 11:00 am at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, 44 Wilson Avenue, Manalapan, NJ. The burial will follow at Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ 07652.
