
Born in New York, he lived in Brooklyn, NY and Annandale, VA before residing in Monroe Township, NJ for 35 years and settling in Little Egg Harbor, NJ 15 years ago.
He was a 1956 graduate of Lincoln High School, then he attended and obtained his BS and MS in Civil Engineering from CCNY. He also obtained his PhD in Earth and Environmental Science from CCNY.
He was an Army veteran.
Dr. Newman worked for New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as the Regional Water Director for NYC.
His community activities include: Monroe Township Chairman of the Environmental Commission, Soccer Coach in Monroe Twp. a member of the Board of Education in Little Egg Harbor, Citizens on Patrol Watch in Little Egg Harbor, a member of Flotilla 7-12 of The Coast Guard Auxiliary, and also was an active member of the JCC of Long Beach Island. As a young man, he was an avid NY Giants Baseball fan until they moved to San Francisco and then became a Mets fan, big Civil War and Revolutionary War buff. He also loved playing the piano, listening to classical music and watching old movies.
He was a polite, kind brilliant honest gentle soul.
He was a wonderful husband to Sandra (nee’ Goodman), Devoted father to Herb Newman of Plainsboro, NJ, Roberta and Howie Kletter of Hallandale Beach, FL, Josh and Valerie Newman of Bethlehem, PA, Dear brother to Nancy Zane of Aventura, FL and Phyllis Newman of NYC. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Chiquita, Sadie, Tyler, Shawn, Nicole, Lauren and Matthew.
Services will be at “BLOOMFIELD-COOPER JEWISH CHAPELS” 44 Wilson Avenue Manalapan, NJ on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Wellwood Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
The Period of Mourning will be observed at the residence 23 Reef Lane Little Egg Harbor, NJ on Monday from 1-7pm. Also at Phyllis Newman residence 240 RiversideBlvd Apt. #16A between 71-72nd Street New York, New York Sunday 5-9pm Minyan 7p, Monday 3-9pm Minyan 7pm.
