At just 21, he embarked on a journey of love and commitment, marrying Leona who would become his lifelong partner. Together, they built a family filled with love, laughter, and memories that will forever be etched in our hearts. For 55 years, they shared a bond that was unbreakable, a love story that weathered the storms of life and stood the test of time. Their lives started in Brooklyn NY, a move to Florida for 7 years and eventually settled in Somerset NJ to raise their 3 children and to be closer to family. Though he had been widowed for the last 11 years, the love between them continued until today.
He was a man of incredible intellect and ambition, graduating from Columbia University at the early age of 19. He pursued a career as a pharmacist and one-time owner of Strathmore Pharmacy in Matawan NJ where he not only dispensed medication but also shared his care and compassion to those in need. His dedication to his profession was evident to all who knew him. He continued his passion for the medical field when he joined the Somerset County Medical Core where he was a volunteer leader.
With an entrepreneurial spirit in 1977 Bob opened his first pet shop, Pets Pets Pets in Chester NJ with the help of his brother-in-law Edward Varty. In 1984 he opened a second store in Franklin Township with his son Howard and in 1989 a third store in South Brunswick with his daughter Ileene.
Known for his passion for Model Trains and Remote-Controlled Cars, Bob with his innovative spirit expanded the Pet Shop to incorporate his hobbies into a business. In 1979 he added a model train and RC car department, creating a hub for hobbyists and enthusiasts alike.
Bob later introduced a beeper and cell phone department, ensuring his shop was always at the forefront of what his community needed. His dedication and creativity left a lasting impact, and he will be fondly remembered for his ability to turn a simple pet shop into a vibrant, multifaceted business that brought happiness to so many.
Retiring at age 58 he became the daycare center for his six grandchildren, his true love of life. His volunteer side saw him for many years working with the Jerry Lewis Telethon, acting at with the Village Theater in Somerset, a board member at his Temple and the community at Somerset Run.
One of his proudest accomplishments with his wife Leona was visiting all 50 states and numerous countries around the globe.
As a father, he was our rock. He raised three children with a steady hand and a loving heart, teaching us the values of hard work, integrity, and kindness. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and a listening ear. He was a man who lived by his favorite song, “My Way”, showing us what it meant to be a good person, to be generous, and to be strong in the face of adversity.
His love extended to his six grandchildren and spouses who brought him immense joy and pride. He cherished every moment with them, and they, in turn, adored their grandfather, who always had a warm smile and a gentle word for each of them.
Bob is survived by his three loving children: Steven (Jody) Berkowitz, Howard (Elena) Berkowitz, IIeene (Michael) Yelo and sister and Helen (Stephen) Chernicoff, and Ethel Chevlin, his former partner for Seven years until he had to move onto a continuing care community. Bob also leaves behind his six adored grandchildren: Adam Berkowitz, Jake Berkowitz, Dani (Noah Klein) Berkowitz, Kayla Berkowitz, Matthew (Erica) Yelo, and Corey Yelo.
Today, as we say goodbye, we also celebrate the incredible legacy he leaves behind. A legacy of love, of family, and of a life well-lived. He may no longer be with us in body, but his spirit will continue to guide us, to inspire us, and to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
