

James J. Madden, Jr., 72, died January 6, 2011 at Catholic Medical Center after a period of declining health. He was born in Manchester on September 16, 1938, the son of the late James J. and Elizabeth (Sullivan) Madden Sr.
He attended Manchester schools and graduated from Bishop Bradley High School, class of 1956. Mr. Madden received his Bachelor’s degree from St. Anselm College and his Master’s degree in History from the University of New Hampshire. He was a teacher at Manchester West High School for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1993.
He was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Sienna parish and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #92. He was formerly a parishioner of St. Anne parish and a former member of the Holy Name Society and St. Vincent DePaul Society. In addition, he held membership in the Manchester Historical Society, the NH Audubon Society and the Currier Gallery of Arts.
He was an avid bicyclist and every year enjoyed touring parts of either this country or Europe.
He is survived by a sister, Mary E. Moran of Salem, NH; a niece, Elizabeth Cunningham and her husband John of Windham, NH; and a nephew Shaun Moran and his wife Lori of Haverhill, MA.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 6 PM in the McHugh Funeral Home, 483 Beech St., corner of Hanover St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 AM in St. Catherine of Sienna Church, Webster St.. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
