

Albert "Al" Hiering of West Point Island, Lavallette, NJ died January 26, 2014 with his family at his side. He was born to the late Christian and Sophie Hiering on January 31, 1920 in Newark. Al recalled with great affection his youth in Seaside Park. He was a Seaside Park Life Guard for 11 summers.
While attending Admiral Farragut Academy, he volunteered to stand guard during the Hindenburg crash at Lakehurst Naval Air Station. When WWII broke out, he joined the Army in 1940 serving in the Pacific Campaign. Al received an honorable discharge as a Lieutenant in 1946. He later married Dorothy Van Hise in 1946 and returned to Rutgers University to finish Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Dorothy and Al moved to West Point Island in 1950. Al was employed by RCA and then as an engineer at Lakehurst Naval Station until his retirement in 1976.
He then assumed the role of General Contractor for a 30 unit ocean front dwelling in Ortley Beach which was one of the few buildings to survive Hurricane Sandy.
Over the course of his life, he built a motor boat, 3 sailboats, 4 guitars, 1 dulcimer and numerous pieces of furniture. He loved to paint pictures of the shore and carved birds.
Al was predeceased by his wife Dorothy and is survived by his 3 children: Gale Hiering Varma of Colorado, Lynn Conrad of California and Brad Hiering of New Jersey and their families of 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ducks Unlimited. Al will be missed by his family and friends. Arrangements were handled by Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, Manchester, NJ.
