Betty J Palumbo, age 87, of Manchester, passed away early September 13, 2023, at Community Memorial Hospital in Toms River, NJ. Betty Palumbo, nee Hamernick was born in Red Bank and raised in Colts Neck with her dear Mother and Father and two beloved younger sisters who she continued close relationships with for the entirety of her life. She was an honor roll student and graduated from Red Bank High School in 1954 where she was also the student council secretary. Betty went on to a lifetime career in the insurance industry and spent four decades with the Trufolo Insurance Agency before finishing her career at both the Hayes and Hickey agencies. Betty was also known for her role in the Insurance Women of Monmouth County Organization throughout the years. Betty became an avid bowler in her early 30s which is where she met her beloved husband Jack with whom she shared 50 years of marriage together before his passing in 2017. An accomplished cook, she is lovingly remembered for the backyard parties and many celebrations she and Jack hosted throughout the years.
She was an active community volunteer in Colts Neck throughout the years where they raised their family. Betty instilled a sense of community in her children and was a proponent of the Fresh Air Fund through which she extended her family to include Percynthia (China) David. China started out visiting in summers and fast became a part of the Palumbo’s family. Betty had a great love for her family and friends and was never at a loss for words. Her dry sense of humor, quick wit and compassion for others made her a delight to be around. Betty was also an active member of the Golf Club and Cambridge Contessa’s both of Leisure Village West, where she also had a strong bond with all her neighbors. Betty spent many years enjoying a home in Sarasota Florida with Jack and they became ‘snowbirds’ upon both of their retirements. Those who knew Betty will also fondly remember her being led around the dance floor by Jack- the pair truly brought joy to all who watched. Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband Jack, both of her parents Joseph & Julia Hamernick as well as her sister Sheila Jackson and brother-in-law Wayne Jackson.
Surviving are her dear sister Sandy Bland and five children including Nicholas Palumbo and his wife, Philly; Jack Palumbo and his wife, Gina; Randy Charlins and his wife, Karen; Linda Law, and her husband, Chris and Jeff Palumbo and his wife, Lerae. Her grandchildren Mathew, Josi, Nicholas, Tanner, Daniel, David, Alan, Rachel, Julia and Jake; great grandchildren Seamus, Samena, Emma, Stella, Taylor James, Gunner and Nicholas. She was also surrounded by many loving nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Monday September 18, 2018, at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home at 10:30 am and a repass will follow.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Community Hospital, specifically the 2nd floor nursing staff, as well as the caregivers from Visiting Angels of Toms River.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Betty’s name for the following charities as well: the Fresh Air Fund, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children, Manchester EMT or the Manchester Fire company #1.
