Fred J. Heinzelmann, age 90, of Manchester Township, New Jersey passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025. Born in Yonkers, NY, Fred grew up in NY before attending NYU for his college studies. He met his wife Leona while skiing in Lake Placid and were soon married. After getting married, they immediately moved to Oakland, CA where he attended UC Berkeley for his Masters degree. After getting his Masters, Fred and Lee moved to New Jersey and settled in Fanwood.
Fred was a highly respected chemical engineer at Exxon for his entire working life. While there, he traveled quite a bit and transferred the family to both Sicily and Aruba for year-long stints. Most of their time was spent living in Fanwood, where they made many close friends. In 2003, Fred and Lee moved to the Renaissance community in Manchester.
While in Manchester, Fred was an active member of the Renaissance. He joined the Wine Club, the Dinner Club and the Bridge Club, of which he and Lee were champions. Fred and Lee loved to travel, and took many trips after Fred's retirement including Europe, Africa and Peru. He enjoyed playing Bocce and listening to ABBA and Willie Nelson. People knew that they could always count on Fred to help make any repairs that were needed; and all agreed that he was one of the most intelligent people that they had ever met.
Fred was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Leona "Lee", his daughter Kim, and his brother Wally Heinzelmann. He is survived by his sons, John Heinzelmann (and his wife Mary Shannon), David Heinzelmann (and his wife Dina), and his cherished grandchildren; Makena, Chris, Drew, and Kim.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday April 19, 2025, at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 3010 Ridgeway Road, Manchester, NJ 08759, from 1-4 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to World Central Kitchen (WCK.org).
