Robert W. Hartman, 75, of Manchester passed away Thursday November 15, 2018 at Aristacare in Manchester with his family by his side. Born in Carlisle, PA, and raised in South Orange, NJ, Bob had lived in Windsor, Connecticut for most of his adult life before moving to Manchester four years ago. Bob was a teacher and coach at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor for 18 years, then worked as an environmental analyst for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection in their Bureau of Water Management for 18 years before his retirement in 2006.
Throughout his time in Connecticut, Bob was active in community organizations including the local Civitan Group and their Challenger Little League for kids with physical disabilities. Bob was heavily involved with scholastic swimming organizations throughout Connecticut and New England. He volunteered for the Red Cross, helping families displaced by fire and national emergencies. He taught CPR, first aid and was a certified instructor for water safety instructors. He also was trained and deployed to fight forest fires in multiple states. While living in Connecticut, Bob kept ties with his Alma Mater, Trinity College in Hartford.
In his summers off from teaching at Loomis Chaffee, Bob was the Waterfront Director at West Hill Camps in Winsted, CT, responsible for the water safety and swimming instruction at the camp. Bob was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping and hiking. He regularly participated in triathlons and other athletic competitions, and he was known for often biking, and sometimes cross-country skiing, to work or other destinations most people would choose to drive to.
Predeceased by his parents, Dr. Winfield and Helen Hartman, Bob is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Carol, his daughter, Pam, his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Jennifer Hartman, and two granddaughters, Samara Bunn-Hartman and Keira Hartman. Also surviving are Bob’s siblings and their spouses, Don and Dawn Hartman, Dave and Caryl Hartman and Kathi and George Creamer.
Family and friends may gather Saturday December 1, 2018 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home with a celebration of his life beginning at 3:00pm.
