Alex Fairful Simpson of 1337 Paul Boulevard, Mansfield died Saturday June 16, 2001 after a long illness. Alex was born to James and Agnes Dwyer Simpson in Iselin, Pennsylvania on December 10, 1917. Alex served his country in World War II in Military Government in Japan. He joined the Volunteers of America in Mansfield in 1954 which he operated with his wife and George and LaRue Ditch sister-in-law and brother-in-law until retiring in 1982. When he arrived at the Volunteers it was headquartered in a condemned house and there was no money to serve the residents or the community. When he retired, the Volunteers served the community with a Thrift Store for the needy, outreach services for disaster victims, an early release program for local inmates, school children's' clothing program and other charitable works in the community. The Volunteers also operated a rehabilitation center for 120 men with alcohol problems including a dormitory, dining room and kitchen, barber shop, recreation room and many repair shops for the restoration of household goods for the Thrift Store. The community donated household goods for the Thrift Store by providing them for pick-up by the easily recognized Volunteers trucks. He was delighted to see the Toy Time program housed in one of the main buildings at the Volunteers after his retirement. He was a charter member of Berean Baptist Church where he served as Assistant Treasurer for 20 years. He also chaired the Building Committee for the original building construction as well as the new main sanctuary.
