Barry Mart Lewis, 83, of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at OhioHealth Mansfield. A devoted family man, respected public servant, and dedicated member of his community, Barry leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and craftsmanship.
Born on January 11, 1942, Barry was one of three children of Albert and Betty O’Neil. A 1960 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, Barry went on to serve his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in France and later at Fort Lewis, Washington.
Following his military service, Barry dedicated 40 years of his life to law enforcement as a police officer and Sargent with the Mansfield Police Department. His career included roles as a juvenile detective and, after retirement, as a bailiff for juvenile court. Barry also served as a resource officer at John Simpson and Mansfield Senior High, where he was a positive influence on many young lives. From 2008 to 2012, he continued his commitment to his community as an Ontario City Councilman.
Barry was a man of many talents. He was an avid craftsman, building a home for his beloved wife, Judie, after retirement, and completing numerous home renovations over the years. His passion for gardening earned him an award for his beautifully landscaped backyard. A skilled cook, Barry took pride in preparing meals for himself and his wife, sharing his love through food.
Above all, Barry excelled at being a father and grandfather, cherishing every moment with his family. He was a dedicated coach at Southwest alongside his father and was always at and actively involved in his children’s sporting events. Barry was an active member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Fraternal Order of Police. Barry's kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will be deeply missed.
Barry is survived by his loving children, Elizabeth "Libby" Robinson (Brennan) and Michael Lewis (Michelle); his cherished grandchildren, Carter and Beau Robinson, Dylan, Ian, Aaron, and Jarret Lewis, and Emie Clifton; his brother, Michael O’Neil (Jan); and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judie Lewis; his son, Scott Adam Lewis; his father, Cleveland Lewis; his mother, Betty O’Neil; his stepfather, Albert O’Neil; his sister, Barbara Zarth; and his mother-in-law, Betty Hoffman.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Sunday, March 23, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and again at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 98 South Diamond Street, Mansfield. A funeral service will follow Monday, March 24, 2025, at 11:00 AM officiated by Pastor Ronnie Sallee. Barry will be laid to rest at Mansfield Memorial Park with full military honors by United States Army Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friendly House in honor of Barry’s lifelong dedication to his community.
