
Claude E. Smith 'Smitty', 60, of Mansfield, died Thursday, May 3, 2007, following a long illness. Claude fought a courageous battle with cancer. He was born December 24, 1946, to Harry and Dorcas Kirk Smith in St. Louis, Missouri, moving to Mansfield as a child and has resided here most of his life. He was employed with Ashland Oil for many years then went on to receive his insurance license, retiring from the insurance business when he became ill. Claude enjoyed playing golf at Coolridge and Deer Creek Golf Courses and watching the Cleveland Indians, Cavs, Browns and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Surviving are his loving wife and caregiver, Kay Smith; five sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Smith at home, John Smith of Mansfield, Mark and Connie Prosser of Crestline, Tim and Nancy Prosser of Mansfield and George Prosser of Florida; five daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Aaron Thompson, Carrie and Daniel Sallee, and Christy and Amon McCormack, all of Willard, Nancy and Glen Riggenbach and Kerry and Tom Henry, all of Mansfield; grandchildren, Blake, Nick, Bronson, Rehgan, Megan, Morgan, Josh, Matthew, Jamie, Mandy, Jackie, Laura, Tyler and Ashley; several great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Jack Hazeltine of Columbus; two nephews, David and Derek; and special cousins, Helen Starr, Charla and Bobbie, all of Newark. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be held Monday, May 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Mansfield Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Jon Steingass. Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors from 12-1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to MedCentral Hospice or the family.
