Donald J. Schmitt, 86, of Mansfield, died Thursday, November 24, 2011 at MedCentral Mansfield. Born December 18, 1924 in Peoria, IL, he was the son of Walter and Emma Schmitt. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Donald graduated from Perdue University and went on to retire as a design engineer for Therm-O-Disc. He was a past member of Westbrook Country Club, as an avid golfer for many years. He also enjoyed racing as a member of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). He always had a passion for cars.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lucille Schmitt of Mansfield; daughters, Sarah (Mark) Carbone of Dana Point, CA and Debbie (Lamar) Mullinax of Madison, GA; and sister, Patty Schmitt of Metamora, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rita Schmitt.
A memorial service will be held Monday, November 28, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at the Diamond St. Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, conducted by Pastor Eddie Massey. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
