

Doris M. Smeltz Campbell, 94, died Wednesday evening, April 21, 2004, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital after a lengthy illness. She left in peace with her son and daughter at her side. She was born November 25, 1909 in Fitchville, Ohio to Samuel and Ella Smeltz the youngest of three children and was raised on the family farm. She was one of the remaining members of the 1927 graduating class of New London High School, along with Pauline Sauer Nott, a lifelong friend. She moved to Mansfield in 1943 and was a member of First United Methodist Church since that time. Doris graduated as a R.N. from Lakewood Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland in 1930. She was a nurse and superintendent at New London Hospital for 12 years, working after that as a private duty nurse for many years. She finished her career working as the office nurse for Dr. K.T. Langacher of Mansfield, retiring in 1972 after twenty two and a half years. Doris was a lifelong member of Order of the Eastern Star and member of U.N.A. Wives, TYTQ and Esther Circle at First United Methodist. She enjoyed reading and talking with her many special friends. When she was younger and able, she made ceramics, hooked rugs and enjoyed flower gardening. She was a lover of animals and always had cocker spaniels in her life. She was married to Paul Campbell for 32 years, who preceded her in death on June 10, 1969.
She is survived by a son, Sam Campbell of Huntsville, Alabama; daughter, Pam Campbell of Mansfield; nieces and nephews, Ronald and Barbara Streng of Meridian, Idaho, Rod and Judy Streng of Flower Mound, Texas and Donna Partridge of Millcreek, Washington; and many other nieces, nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews. Doris was also preceded in death by a sister Anita Streng of Fitchville and a brother Ivan Smeltz of Cleveland.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 1, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Charles Tobias. Friends may call at the church one-hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
